A Beacon Of Hope

Our Mission is to serve as a beacon of hope by providing transitional services and helping women achieve self-sufficiency.

A House of Love and Support

Our founder, Amber Brown, insisted on ensuring that justice-involved women had a place to call home that offered inclusivity and unconditional love. In 2020, Amber purchased her first home and called it the Black Butterfly House. With the help of volunteers and board members, Amber transformed the house into a one-of-a-kind home.

Since opening our doors, Black Butterfly Women Services (BBWS) has served over 40 women at risk of homelessness. BBWS partners with the corrections and several of Minnesota’s Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment centers to intentionally engage women with histories of incarceration, substance use, homelessness, and trauma. Affordable housing is among the most needed resources for those recently released from incarceration or discharged from residential treatment facilities. In addition, affordable housing is central to eliminating economic and health barriers.

While our doors are open to all women in search of another chance at life, the Black Butterfly housing model is designed to be responsive to the cultural needs of BIPOC women, who experience the highest rates of homelessness in Minnesota. In addition, to ensure women have a safe and sober living environment, we assist residents by connecting them with volunteer mentors and certified peer recovery specialists to shepherd them through their recovery journey.

We partner with each resident to develop an individualized strength-based plan that outlines their goals and the resources needed to achieve them in health and wellness, economics, family well-being, education, and family support. While BBWS has only scratched the surface of its potential impact, we have been wildly successful at facilitating change one life at a time. With the support of BBWS, residents of Black Butterfly completed court-mandated treatment programs, attained and maintained employment, accessed education programs, and reunited with their children suitably and healthily. BBWS thrives on ensuring that each woman walking through the doors is embraced with love, support, and community.

Black Butterfly is committed to being part of the solution!
